Psychology is both a science and a profession. It is the study of experience and behavior. At its deepest levels, psychology helps people uncover inconsistencies in their thoughts and beliefs that prevent them from achieving greater comfort, strength, and joy in their lives. Psychologists use their knowledge and training to assist people in their efforts toward greater fulfillment, broader perspectives, constructive solutions and achievement of their highest potential.
People often have a sense that they are capable of more, that some things are just outside of reach and they don't know why, or that they are in discomfort for reasons obscure to them. Sometimes people are confronted with difficult situations that feel impossible to deal with or that cause them conflict, anguish or confusion. Psychologists interact with people to identify inconsistencies, resistances, behaviors, styles of living, conflicts, stresses, and other factors that impede optimal functioning, effectiveness and experience. Psychology can look at behaviors and more constructive, effective alternatives. Psychological services can have great value.
